Congratulations to our graduating seniors!
In honor of our graduating seniors and their achievements, the Department of Psychology invites all Class of 2018 Psychology Majors, Psychology Concentrators, Neuroscience & Behavior Majors, and Postbacs to our Class Day Celebration.
Professor Larisa Heiphetz has been awarded a Grant from the Junior Faculty Development Grant Review Committee for her research project entitled "Because He Is A Bad Person": How Explanations Influence Children's and Adults' Social Perceptions.
Professor Mariam Aly has been awarded the diversity grant from the Provost's Grants program for Junior Faculty who Contribute to the Diversity Goals of the University. Professor Aly is excited to be able to contribute to the long tradition of our Psychology Department's faculty who have won this grant.
Professor Valerie Purdie-Greenaway was featured as the lead scientist for the Embrace Ambition Summit sponsored by the Tory Burch Foundation. It was held at Alice Tully Hall in Lincoln Center. The summit had over 1,000 women in attendance and was livestreamed nationally. To watch the Summit, click the link provided:

The goal was to help women overcome "the negative attitudes about ambition in women and [to address] other harmful stereotypes that impact gender, race, and sexuality". Prof. Purdie-Greenaway talked about the science of women in leadership and was accompanied by leaders such as Katie Couric, Debbie Sterling (Founder and CEO of GoldiBlox), and Tory Burch.
On April 27, 2018 Professor Valerie Purdie-Greenaway interviewed Pulitzer Prize winner Jodi Kantor as part of a Columbia College Women Signature Event. Kantor is credited alongside Megan Twohey, as being the first reporters to break the Harvey Weinstein story, which lead to the groundswell of women's voices that helped ignite the #metoo movement into a viral phenomenon.
Join Columbia College Women for this year's signature event: A thought-provoking conversation between New York Times investigative reporter Jodi Kantor CC’96, who broke the Harvey Weinstein story, and Columbia Professor of Psychology Valerie Purdie-Greenaway CC’93, who researches biases against women and minorities. They’ll exchange ideas and inspiration for changing the rules of society to ultimately benefit both women and men.

Chelsea Harmon, graduate student in the Developmental Affective Neuroscience Lab, has been awarded the 2018 NSF Graduate Research Fellowship
Michelle VanTieghem, a graduate student in the Developmental Affective Neuroscience Lab, has been selected as a recipient of the "American Psychological Foundation's 2018 Elizabeth Munsterberg Koppitz Fellowship"
Join us on Tuesday April 10th for the Psychology Department Spring Majors Forum. The event will be taking place in Schermerhorn 200B and pizza and refreshments will be served.
"The Zuckerman Institute’s Seed Grant Program for MR Studies funds magnetic resonance (MR) studies to help the Columbia community ramp up its MR research and MR grant acquisition. The program’s purpose is to ensure that the Columbia research community can rapidly expand the utilization of MR techniques, including functional (fMRI), structural (e.g. diffusion), and metabolic (e.g. spectroscopy) imaging."
All prospective majors, there will be a spring open house on February 23rd from 4-5:30pm in Schermerhorn 200B.
Megan Goldring received an APAGS Psychological Science Research Grant for her project entitled, "If your friends jump off a bridge, is it better to jump with them or alone? Morality, conformity, and blame." Goldring is a lab member of Professor Niall Bolger's lab; the grant is for a collaboration that she is doing with Professor Larisa Heiphetz's lab.
